PARENTING IN THE SILICON VALLEY
If you’re a parent in the in the Silicon Valley you’ve probably felt the pressure to position your kids to be superstar adults. We live in a fast-paced, performance-measured culture with great achievement; and yet we often carry this weight of performance as a burden.
Here are two perspective shifts that can increase your capacity as a parent and minimize the burden of performance on your children.
1 | FAILURE PRODUCES GROWTH
Should parents always shield children from failure to protect their self-worth? No, because failure can be a good thing. When children have healthy support structures, small failures in adolescence produce positive qualities as adults that cannot be understood outside of personal experience.
Instead of protecting kids from moments of discouragement, it is best to use these situations as opportunities to shape the way our children respond to the inevitable seasons of failure they’ll face in adulthood.
2 | CHARACTER IS GREATER THAN COMPETENCY
Measuring success through achievement starts with our kids hitting developmental milestones, being able to recite and accurately enunciate the ABC’s, getting perfect grades, winning awards and so on. Milestones are helpful and serve an important purpose, but can become problematic if we always focus on competency and achievement rather than character.
Competency is important but virtues such as honesty, hard work and courage actually produce the type of success we all hope our children experience.
We hope these two simple perspective shifts help as you navigate the complexities of raising children in the Silicon Valley.
